Gurīn Energy launches new scholarship for aspiring women engineers in Fukushima
Tokyo, Thursday, September 11, 2025 – Gurīn Energy, a leading renewable energy developer in Asia, today announced that it has launched a scholarship for women in engineering in Fukushima Prefecture.
The Singapore-headquartered company signed a cooperation agreement with Fukushima Prefectural Techno Academy Hama earlier this year. The agreement will see the two organisations work hand in hand to work towards improving the diversity of the talent pipeline in the fields of robotics, environmental energy systems, and the construction industry.
Three outstanding female students from the Fukushima Prefectural Techno Academy Hama have received the scholarship for the current academic year.
Ushio Okuayama, Country Manager for Japan at Gurīn Energy, said: “In Japan, there’s long been an imbalance in the number of men and women in the engineering sector. With the launch of this scholarship, we hope our contribution brings us one step closer to encouraging more women within Fukushima Prefecture to pursue their studies in this area. We are always on the lookout for local talent to join our team, and we look forward to working with more talented women engineers to shape a sustainable future for Fukushima and Japan.”
Gurīn Energy has donated 990,000 yen to the Fukushima Techno Academy Hama Support Association this year. The donation will go towards funding grant-based scholarships of 380,000 yen per year for students in Robotics and Environmental Energy Systems Department, and 120,000 per year for students in the Architecture Department. The scholarship programme may be expanded in coming years depending on the needs and response of the school.
Additionally, Gurīn Energy will offer special classes on grid-connected storage batteries and facilitate internship opportunities, which will be open to all students in the Robotics, Environmental Energy System, and Construction Departments at Fukushima Techno Academy Hama.
Gurīn Energy is developing a 240MW 4-hour battery energy storage project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture. The Soma Project is the first phase of Gurīn Energy’s commitment to deliver 500MW 4-hours or 2GWh of energy storage capacity in Japan.
Grid-connected battery energy storage system support Japan’s progress towards achieving its targets of 40-50 per cent of renewables in the national energy mix by 2040 and carbon neutrality by 2050.
Okuyama added: “We are grateful to Fukushima Techno Academy Hama for their trust and partnership, and look forward to our continued collaboration throughout the entire life cycle of the Soma Project. We congratulate the three deserving students who have received scholarships this year and wish them success in their undoubtedly bright futures.”
